Pieces

Review: Pieces by Arrow Video

The Lowdown:
Kid gets busted by his mom playing with a nudie puzzle and gets scolded. Little boy hacks up mommy. 40 years later a killer is on a college campus hacking up girls with a chainsaw trying to complete his own jigsaw puzzle.

My thoughts:
I had no idea what I was getting myself into other than it looked like an average 80's slasher. Well, upon viewing I was a little conflicted as to whether I was watching a slasher or a giallo. There is plenty of gore to go around but the atmosphere, music and tone screamed giallo. The killer remains cloaked and we see a lot of POV shots of the killers black gloved hands which to me says giallo. Well this film is neither Italian nor American, it is indeed a Spanish made film dubbed in English. I gotta say though, I wasn't the biggest fan of this. The dialogue is terrible and nonsensical and the acting leaves little to be desired. I will say if you're looking for some solid gore scenes or just something fun to watch with some friends and some adult beverages then there is something to be had here. The print quality and sound were all pretty solid on this release although the dialogue could be a little quieter as it is a tad loud for my liking. While not my favorite slasher, it is worth checking out at least once.

Hi everyone!

I've put up three mediocre reviews so far and I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Chancey and I hail from Fort Smith, AR. I love all horror flicks and figured I might as well give my thoughts on some of them. I'm not a writer and haven't professionally written anything so please forgive the super amateurish writings. Please feel free to leave a comment and let me know how I'm doing or give me some suggestions. This is all very new to me. I also am not sure how frequent reviews will go up so just keep checking back. Thanks everyone!

The Den

Review: The Den by IFC Films

The Lowdown:
Our leading lady Elizabeth decides to write her college thesis on Chat Roulette-esque website "The Den" & spends all her time talking to people from all over the world. What happens when a cyber serial killer decides Elizabeth is next?

My Thoughts:
I really, really dug this flick. This is a movie that's told entirely through Elizabeth's webcam or various cellphones. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found it rather engaging. This is a fast paced movie clocking in at a brief 76 minutes, but that is all you need. The acting is nothing special and there's not a lot of character development, but what it does, it does great. The Den gets under your skin. The movie is tense and unnerving. You can't help but look at your computer and think "Is there someone looking back at me?". I loved it. IFC knocks it out of the park with this creepy little found footage film.

Exists

Review: Exists by Lionsgate

The Lowdown:
Five friends decide to go camping and bring along a lot of digital cameras. Ole' Squatch comes along to wreck shop!

My Thoughts:
The horror genre is seriously being over-saturated with all this found footage trash that's been flooding the market ever since the Blair Witch hit the screens. There are some gems to be found and then there's a lot of shit. Ok, mostly shit. I'm quite pleased to say that Exists is a gem in my book. Think "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and then set it in the woods..and add bigfoot. Oh!, don't forget to upload it to the YouTubes. That's basically Exists. No, really..it's good. If you liked Blair Witch then give this a shot because Ed Sanchez the co-director of Blair Witch also directed this. If you want an entertaining bigfoot movie and you wanna shut your brain off for 90 minutes then look no further. Please, just please stay away from Willow Creek. This one kicks it's ass hands down!

Night of the Demons

Review: Night of the Demons by Scream Factory

The Lowdown:
Halloween night and some teens get together to party in an abandoned funeral home and decide to summon some demons. Shit goes bad and teens are picked off one by one. Who's gonna survive the night?

My Thoughts:
I grew up seeing this little diddy at movie stores when I was a kid. I was always afraid of Angela on the cover. Many years later as a teenager I finally gave it a chance and loved it. As an adult I got the chance to check it out again and I must say..this movie is pretty rad. Pure 80's cheese through and through. Kids go to a Halloween party and have a seance and conjure an evil spirit. One by one they become possessed and one by one they die. Simple premise. The soundtrack is fun and the acting is mostly hilarious but this is just one of those movies you wanna gather with friends and kick back and have a few drinks. I was pretty stoked when Scream Factory put this out. The print looks awesome and there are features aplenty. If you're a fan of 80's haunted house flicks and aren't looking for something serious then go out and pick up this bad boy right now.
